A letter from the founder
To the lawyers who do the best work,
For a hundred years, the best legal work has been done inside a pyramid: a few partners at the top, hundreds of associates beneath them. Most people and most companies never get near it.
That is changing. AI can now read the documents, research the law and draft the first turn in minutes. What it can't do is judge what matters, what to concede, or what to tell a client at midnight before a signing. That was always the real job.
Mike is our experiment in what comes next: an AI lawyer that does the groundwork itself and calls on the best human lawyers the moment a matter needs judgment.
We want to take the finest legal expertise from the few to the many. Mike can't do that alone. If you do exceptional work, at a firm of any size, we would like you to be one of the first.
Questions
Is it free to join?
Yes. Membership is by invitation, and joining costs nothing.
How does Mike pay me?
Mike pays Founding Counsel a monthly retainer, Forward Deployed Counsel per matter, and On Call Counsel per reply. Every fee is agreed with you before work starts.
What does Mike share with me?
Only what you need to answer the question or run the matter. Treat every brief as confidential.
What about conflicts?
You run your own conflict check before taking anything on. You can decline any request without giving a reason.
Is Mike a law firm?
No. Mike-1 is an experimental AI lawyer from Index Law, not a law firm. When you advise, you advise as an independent lawyer, responsible for your own advice and professional obligations.
Do I have to leave my firm?
Not necessarily. Forward Deployed and On Call work can fit alongside your current role, subject to your firm's rules and your professional obligations.
